Historic Home in Raleigh’s Oakwood District

This property lacked a functional yard and general upkeep; the yard was old and in disarray. The project was to build a new deck in the yard while keeping the same historic feel of the house. The style of the front porch was carried into the design of the arbor and decking, which was built in a traditional style.

One of the challenges was that the yard sloped upwards towards the neighbor’s house, which meant a retaining wall had to be built. If you notice underneath the arbor is not decking – it is brick, which is the retaining wall. All the old brick pathways in the garden were repaved and repurposed. Tigerwood was used for the decking and the arbor lattice is also handmade out of tigerwood. The result was a yard that completely complemented and respected the original architecture of the home
Lake Gaston, VA Lake House

This wonderful lake house lacked a venue to observe the beautiful eastern view of Lake Gaston. The challenges were to design a deck that would take advantage of the view, include a fire pit area, outdoor kitchen, bar area, hot tub, and also an area large enough to entertain. Many details were surrounding this project. The arbor over the outdoor kitchen has fully adjustable louvers and can be tilted to compensate for the area of the sun. The fire pit was custom-made of stainless steel and tigerwood and includes seating that mimics the fire pit shape. The skirting was trimmed with heavy duty lattice and painted to match the house. The owner requested to use the space underneath the deck, which was equipped with a waterproof ceiling and electricity so the owner is able to use this area as a wood shop. It was commented that this was not just a deck, but a work of art.
